Aptiv PLC, a global technology company focused on enabling a safer, greener and more connected future, on Monday opened a new Software, Advanced Safety & User Experience (AS&UX) Technical Centre in Chennai. This is the company’s second centre in the city and fourth in the country after Pune and Bengaluru.

The artificial intelligence/Machine Learning power labs will accelerate development of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, said a company official. The investment in the new centre is part of the $60 million announced by the company two years ago, said a senior official.

The new facility will support up to 500 engineers by 2026 and features advanced labs and test infrastructure to accelerate innovation in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and safety-critical systems.

The centre was inaugurated by Aptiv’s senior leaders and Mahindra – one of the major clients – including Javed Khan, Executive Vice President and President of Software, Advanced Safety and User Experience (AS&UX) at Aptiv, and R. Velusamy, President, Automotive Business (Designate), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, says a release.

Khan said the centre will strengthen the company’s ability to localise AI/ML-powered ADAS and advanced interior sensing technologies for the Indian market.

Mathew Cole, Senior Vice President and President, Global AS&UX at Aptiv said the company employs around 13,000 in India. This includes the company’s manufacturing plant at Oragadam near Chennai where the company manufactures various technology solutions for the India market. “The India market is so huge and the company would like develop products for the domestic market,” he added.
